Ernest Thompson’s beloved play is anchored in the life-long romance between Norman and Ethel Thayer. The play’s themes of mortality, relationships and reconciliation are conveyed by the depth of the story, the richness of the characters and the subtle power behind Thompson's dialogue.
Parts being cast:
Norman Thayer – Norman, 80 is showing his age both physically and mentally. A retired professor at Penn, he carries himself with authority while maintaining a boyish and peppery side. He has long used sarcasm and wit as a way of distancing himself.
Ethel Thayer – Ethel, 69, energetic, outgoing and deeply in love with Norman tries to negotiate much of his frequently cantankerous interaction with the world. Sings camp song.
Charlie Martin – The local mailman, Charlie, age 44, is a friendly, open Maine native with a big laugh and a charming nature. He has never gotten over his crush on Chelsea.
Chelsea Thayer Wayne – Norma and Ethel’s 42 year old daughter is pretty, athletic and perhaps a couple of pounds too heavy. She shares her father’s wit and sharp tongue. Her relationship with Norman is strained. Sings camp song.
Billy Ray – 13, short and flippant. His developing relationship with Norman as a surrogate son/grandson is marked by mutual respect, love, and genuine affection.
Bill Ray – Attractive 45, Chelsea’s fiancé and Billy’s father. He can hold his own with Norman at his most acerbic.
Operator – Maine accent off stage voice or recording
